The correct tensioning of clipper blades is essential for effective clipping and increases the life of clipper blades. Lister blades are easy to fit and tension correctly:
With Lister clippers, fit the blades, tension bolt, spring and nut. To achieve the correct tension, turn the nut down firmly until it will go no further. Then turn it back by one and a half turns using the marker. Oil the blades liberally before use, between the teeth, the blades at the side, through the hole to the crank roller and then wipe off the excess oil.

With the clipper running, gradually tighten the tension nut from the slack position until the tone (speed) of the clipper begins to drop. Then release the tension of the plates by turning the nut in an anticlockwise direction approximately ¼ of a turn until the clipper regains normal speed. The plates are now set for clipping.
For best results and maximum life from the clipping plates it is important to keep the tension as light as possible while still achieving a good clean cut. Performance will not be improved by excessive plate tension, in fact the reverse will occur, with overheating of the motor and excessive wear on the plates.

With the machine switched off, tighten the adjusting screw until first resistance is noticeable, Then tighten a further 1/4 turn. When the blades cease clipping adequately the adjusting screw should be tightened a further1/4 turn. If the blades still do not cut the blades should be re-sharpened.

CLIPPING WITH ALL MAKES OF CLIPPER
It is essential to oil blades regularly and thoroughly with a recommended oil,. Always use Lister R15, Liveryman clipper oil or a very light machine oil. It is recommended that blades are oiled every 5-10 minutes during clipping. Oil should be applied to the points located on the clipper heads that are referred to in the instruction booklet for each clipper. If the plates are not cutting well after a period of use, It is possible that hair or dirt is lodged between the plates, preventing a good clean cut. In this case, unplug clipper, remove the plates and clean them thoroughly then refit and re-tension as per previous Instructions. If they still do not cut it is certain that they need re-sharpening.

Always clip against the grain of hair. A close clip cannot be obtained by cutting with the grain
REMEMBER
It will be easier to clip and a better result will be obtained if the coat of the horse is clean to start with
